I also don't think they thought it would foster the creation of so many different applications and companies that support the format with third party products.
I don't think they thought it would be as successful or as lasting as it has been. When Adobe created the PDF document (PDF stands for Portable Document Format), it hoped that it would be creating a standard. Create and edit PDF files with this easy to use, affordable Windows app.
